The Butaphalt System:

Deciding which polymer to use with which asphalt to meet which specification is complex requiring a high degree of technical expertise. Our knowledgeable and experienced staff of polymer chemists and chemical engineers are able to quickly investigate many options and arrive at solutions that are practical, cost-effective and capable of providing superior repeatable performance.

Butaphalt PMA's Exhibit:

Improved Compatibility: The Butaphalt System dramatically improves compatibility between asphalt and polymer as shown in the fluorescent microscopy scans below. This same compatibility is reflected in test results when actual separation is measured. (see Technical Bulletin BQ-1)

Better Performance: Butaphalt PMA's show superior performance in both SHRP and traditional testing. Butaphalt PMA's also have exhibited improved elastic behavior, sometimes dramatic, in force ductility and phase angle testing. (see Technical Bulletin BC-1)

Reduced Polymer Loadings: By utilizing the Butaphalt System, polymer level reductions of up to .5% can be achieved while allowing comparable or superior levels of performance. (see Technical Bulletin BC-2)

Reduced Sensitivity to Base Asphalt Cement: Butaphalt cross-linking agents are proven to significantly reduce sensitivity to the type of base asphalt used. This enhances formulating flexibility and extends the range of usable asphalts by allowing formulations previously thought useless. (see Technical Bulletin BC-1)

Improved PG Gradings: Repeated tests show the use of Butaphalt reactant yields improvements in physical properties including Superpave PG grade and elastic properties. (see Technical Bulletin BC-1)


Fluorescent microscope scans of polymer modified asphalt show an uneven dispersion of large polymer particles.


After treatment with Butaphalt Reactant, scans show an even dispersion of polymer particles resulting in an exceptional stable system.
