Butaphalt® Cross-Linking Agents can be used to chemically bond polymer and asphalt cement. Used at very low levels, typically 0.1-0.2% of the asphalt, they provide a very stable, chemically bonded cross-linked structure. The enhanced properties that result from this structure can either be used to attain performance improvements, or the amount of polymer can be reduced so that specifications can be met at a lower cost. The results of course depend upon the asphalt/polymer combination being used. We have found after extensive testing that generally between 0.25-0.5% less polymer is needed. Sometimes this is as high as 1% and in very rare cases it is zero. Some typical test results are given below. In this case by using 0.2% of Butaphalt® Cross-Linking Agent we have been able to reduce the polymer level from 3% to 2.5% and we still obtain better performance properties. We would be pleased to demonstrate the saving that we can make with your asphalt.
